Most companies do not have an AI agent problem. They have an AI agent orchestration problem.
The pattern shows up the same way every time. A team ships one agent that works. It answers tickets, or drafts summaries, or routes leads. Then someone asks the obvious next question. Can it hand off to the agent finance built? Nobody knows. There is no shared runtime, no audit trail, no place to see what ran and why. The second agent gets built anyway. The failure data is unusually clear on this point.

The same Gartner analysis found that of the thousands of vendors marketing agentic AI, roughly 130 are actually building it. The rest are rebranding assistants, chatbots, and robotic process automation. Gartner calls this agent washing. If you bought an agent platform in the last 18 months, there is a real chance you bought a wrapper.
Meanwhile the demand curve keeps climbing. Gartner expects 33% of enterprise software applications to include agentic AI by 2028, up from less than 1% in 2024, and 15% of day-to-day work decisions to be made autonomously by 2028, up from 0% in 2024 (Gartner, 2025). ISG found that only 31% of AI use cases reach full production today (ISG, 2025).
So the volume of agents is going up fast, the production rate is low, and the cancellations are driven by cost and control. That is a plumbing crisis waiting to happen. The companies that survive it will be the ones who put agents on a governed runtime before they have nine of them.
What n8n Does
n8n is a workflow automation and agent orchestration platform. Jan Oberhauser founded it in Berlin in 2019 as an open source project, and it now runs under a fair-code license with a free self-hosted Community Edition on GitHub, where the repository has passed 202,000 stars.
The practical description is simple. You build workflows on a visual canvas, and when the canvas runs out of road you drop into JavaScript or Python in a code node. It ships more than 1,000 integrations and more than 10,000 workflow templates. It triggers from webhooks and queues, it can be driven by API and CLI, and it supports multi-agent orchestration where several agents coordinate inside one auditable execution.
Three things separate it from the visual automation tools most teams try first.
- Deployment control. You can run it on n8n Cloud, where data sits on EU servers in Frankfurt, or self-host it anywhere your compliance team requires. For regulated industries and GDPR-bound organizations, that is often the deciding factor.
- Execution-based billing. One workflow run is one execution no matter how many steps it contains. Tools that bill per step or per task make complex workflows expensive by design, which quietly pushes teams toward simpler automations than the problem needs.
- Real developer surface. JavaScript and Python code steps, custom API and GraphQL requests, custom nodes and bash scripts on self-hosted, Git version control, and separate dev, staging, and production environments on the Business tier.
The market has validated the direction. n8n raised a $180 million Series C led by Accel in October 2025 at a $2.5 billion valuation, then SAP took a strategic stake in May 2026 that doubled the valuation to $5.2 billion, alongside a multi-year agreement to embed n8n inside Joule Studio in the SAP Business AI Platform. Public customer logos include Microsoft, NVIDIA, Dell, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Mercedes-Benz, and Novo Nordisk. That is an enterprise roster, not a hobbyist one.
Who n8n Is Actually For
We recommend n8n when an Elevates.AI assessment produces a specific combination of signals. Not when a company simply says it wants agents.
- You have at least one engineer who can own the platform. Someone who reads JSON, debugs an HTTP call, and is comfortable on a terminal. Without that person, n8n becomes shelfware in about five weeks.
- You have a data residency or regulatory constraint. Healthcare, financial services, defense, public sector, or any EU organization with a strict GDPR posture. Self-hosting turns a blocker into a configuration choice.

If you read that list and recognized none of it, n8n is probably the wrong tool for you right now. What to Consider Before You Commit
Four honest trade-offs, because a recommendation without them is an advertisement.
The pricing jump is steep
Cloud plans start at 20 euros per month for 2,500 executions and 50 euros per month for 10,000. The Business tier is 667 euros per month billed annually and is self-hosted only. Self-hosting is real operational work
Free software is not free infrastructure. You own the server, the upgrades, the queue mode configuration, the monitoring, and the secrets management. Budget engineering hours, not just license cost. This is the line item teams most often leave out of the business case.
Support is thin below Enterprise
The Business plan is self-serve. Dedicated support with an SLA only arrives at Enterprise. Below that you rely on email support and a community forum of roughly 170,000 members. The forum is genuinely good. It is still not a support contract, and business-critical workflows deserve one.
Fair-code is not the same as open source
The license is source-available with commercial restrictions, most notably around hosting n8n as a competing service. For most buyers this is irrelevant. If your legal team has a strict OSI-approved-only policy, raise it early rather than late.
One more caution that applies to every tool in our marketplace. Orchestration will not fix bad data, absent governance, or an unclear business case.
